On February 15, 2012, Coach Porras, Coach McWilliams and Superintendent Cook, traveled to Fort Stockton for a basketball district meeting. The meeting's purpose was to pick the 1st team All District, 2nd team All District, Newcomer of the Year, and Honorable Mention athletes for our district for the 2011-2012 season.
Unfortunately, district selections cannot be released until all the teams in our district are out of the playoffs. Right now, teams that are in the playoffs are the Fort Davis girls. They already made it to Area by defeating the Buena Vista girls for the Bi-District championship title. Their Area game will be against the #10 ranked team in the state of Texas! Sierra Blanca girls are still going to to play their playoff game against Bronte. The Balmorhea girls were defeated and lost their playoff game against Rankin.
As far for the boys teams, none of them have played yet. Our Valentine Pirates will play next Monday February 20, 2012 at the Pete P. Gallego center at Sul Ross State University. Since the subject of the meeting is top secret we can't release any more information than what has been allowed to be released. But we will definitely keep posting updates of how the 2012 playoffs turn out. Good luck to all the teams!

The Valentine Pirates will be playing the Buena Vista Longhorns on Monday February the 20th. Since the Pirates did not take a win against the Fort Davis Indians, they will be playing the Longhorns who are also number three in their district. So far, the Buena Vista Longhorns have a pretty good record but we are not sure if they won their last game against Marathon. The game will be at Sul Ross State University starting at 6:30 pm in the Pete Gallego center. The Pirates record so far is 7-2 losing to the Fort Davis Indians twice.

Well, Pirates, I have some good news and some bad news for you today. The bad news is....the Pirates basketball team lost the tie-breaker game against Fort Davis Friday. It was a close, hard-fought game.
The first quarter ended with a score of 8 to 10 with the Indians ahead. But the Pirates outscored the Indians 15 to 11 in the second quarter giving the Pirates a 23 to 21 lead going into the second half. It was a close third quarter with the score being 32 to 31, the Pirates ahead. In the fourth quarter the Pirates ran into some foul trouble with Daniel Garnsey fouling out leaving the team without they're top rebounder. Because of this, the Indians were able to pull ahead with a final score of 50 to 44. The Pirates are now 7-2 going into next weeks game against Buena Vista.

Tuesday night was a very emotional night for the Pirates, and Lady Pirates, as well as their parents! After both games all the Pirates and Lady Pirates lined up on the east side of the gym, the parents on the west side. Coach Porras announced the names of the players and their parents, they met in the middle, then they gave their parents red and white carnation flowers.
After all the kids and the parents had their pictures taken, all the seniors, Nicole Campbell, Adriana Rangel, Aaron Morton, and Cayenne Webb were give goodie baskets. Coach Mac specially handed over Aaron's basket to him. Everybody had tears on their eyes. Everyone is so greatful that all the parents showed up to support the Pirates and Lady Pirates.
This year was a good year for both teams. Lady Pirates improved greatly this year. Sadly, this was the last Lady Pirate Basketball team for a good while. The Pirates did great this year, now it's off to the playoffs from now! Let's go Pirates!!!!!!!!

Today Pirates will travel to Marfa to play Fort Davis. We are hoping to bring home a win. Maybe we could get to where we were last year. This shall be a great game, because Fort Davis beat us, then we beat them. So we are all really looking forward to see this game. If we lose it is okay, because we know we played a great season. If we win, great!! But just remember guys, there is no pressure what so ever. Just go and play your hearts out!

The Pirates won their last basketball game of the district season! They defeated the Balmorhea Bears 49-35, bringing their winning streak to six in a row now. The Pirates are set to play one last game before the playoffs in Marfa, TX, against the Fort Davis Indians to settle the tie breaker for 1st place. Play hard and play smart Pirates!
The Pirates played hard last night (2-7-12) as it was their last home game of the season. The Pirates are now 7-1 and are expected to be playing in the playoffs. Last night was Senior Aaron Morton's last home game as a Valentine Pirate. Aaron Morton played good, bringing in 16 points and a couple of rebounds. As for the other Pirates, Latham Garnsey had 4 points and 6 rebounds, Enrique Navarrete had 2 points, and Daniel Garnsey had 27 points and 13 rebounds.
The boys did a good job on both sides of the court as a matter of fact, as Aaron Morton had 2 steals, Latham Garnsey with 1, and Daniel Garnsey with another 2. As for fouls, Daniel Garnsey was the only Pirate with a foul. Keep up the good work boys and don't let us down.
The Pirates will be playing on Friday the 10th, 2012 in Marfa, TX. The game will be held at 7:00 PM in the MHG (Marfa High School Gym) to determine the district champs. Come support your Pirates as they take on yet another exciting game of the basketball season.

The 7-1 Pirates and the 7-1 Indians are locked in a tie. In order to determine which team is first in the district, there will be a tie-breaker game Friday February 10th in Marfa at seven o'clock. Mr. Cook and Coach Mac met with Coach Lamar of Fort Davis yesterday, and made all the arrangements. "Everyone agreed on the arrangements and the meeting went smoothly”, said Mr. Cook.
The coaches decided on Marfa because it was the most neutral gym. The teams will travel close to the same amount. The Indians will be the home team and the Pirates will be the visitors. This was decided by a coin toss. That means the Indians will be providing the time keepers, gate keepers, bookkeepers, and the administrator on duty. This will be the third time the teams have played each other and it will definitely be a good battle between the two. All Pirates please try to attend and support our team.

The Valentine Pirates were victorious against Balmorhea. In the first quarter, the Pirates scored eight points, falling behind the Bears by two points. By the third quarter, the game was still close, but the Pirates gained on the Bears by eight points. The final score was 49 to 35. The Pirates are now tied for first place with Fort Davis. The playoff date and time are to be determined today. The Lady Pirates played an aggressive game against the Lady Bears, but lost with the ending score of 73 to 20.

Today is the last district game for the Pirates and Lady Pirates basketball teams as they take on the Balmorhea Bears. The Lady Pirates have not won a game in district this year yet, but if they win tonight it will be a great victory for all the girls, and mostly the Seniors. The Valentine boys have a chance of being number one if they win tonight, but they are still tied with the Fort Davis Indians.
The Pirates will be heading to the playoffs even if they don't win tonight. So if you are interested, come on out to the Valentine gym at 6:30 for the girls game and the boys game following right after. Don't forget to get a tasty travel class burger!

Get ready for the Valentine Pirates final District game! On Tuesday February the 7th, the Valentine pirates will be playing the Balmorhea Bears at Valentine, Texas. So far, the Valentine Pirates have played seven games and are tied for number one with the Fort Davis Indians. If the Fort Davis Indians win their game against Dell City on Friday February the 3rd , the Pirates will both still be tied for number one unless they lose to Balmorhea on Tuesday. The Pirates district record is now 6-1 only losing to Fort Davis, and them only losing to Valentine. If the Pirates win or lose on Tuesday we still have a place in the Playoffs.
So far, Balmorhea is in third, tied with Sierra Blanca. Just because Valentine beat them last game does not mean the Pirates will win this one. Last game they had Valentine down by fourteen in the first quarter, but by the end of the second the Pirates were about two ahead. The next two quarters were one score after another. In the end Valentine won by eighteen with a score of 49-31. The game will start following the girls game 6:30, so be sure to be there and support the Valentine Pirates and Lady Pirates.

The Pirates played the Sierra Blanca Vaqueros yesterday night (1-31-12) for their seventh district basketball game. The Pirates are now 6-1 in the district, and have won five in a row. Let's keep up the streak boys and continue on into the playoffs.
"We started off pretty good, but then we started to play really weak,” said the Pirate Basketball team. "We can't ever play like that again and expect to come out with the win.”
The Pirates are scheduled to play the Balmorhea Bears next Tuesday (2-7-12-) here in the House of Mac with the Lady Pirates and the Lady Bears starting the tip off at 6:30 PM.

The scorers for that night were Aaron Morton, making 24 points, Daniel Garnsey scoring 20, Enrique Navarrete pulling in 6 points, and Latham Garnsey making 2 points. The Pirates beat the Vaqueros 52-45. The Pirates will practice hard and hope to eliminate all the mistakes before their last district basketball game of the season.

There is one second on the clock, Rye Webb is at the free throw line with the score 60-60. The crowd is going wild and Rye has to make this shot that will tie the Valentine Pirates for first in the district. Rye takes a breath, follows through and it goes in.

The crowd goes wild, Latham hits the ground, Enrique and I are both jumping like a bunch of rabbits. Fort Davis takes a shot but misses. Valentine ends up taking the game 61-60. I asked Rye Webb how he felt when he made that shot and he said "I was excited and nervous but when I made it I didn't think it was that big of a deal.” Well thanks to Rye's amazing free throw skills Valentine is now tied for first in the district.

So far, the Valentine Pirates have played five district games. The first was a victory against Dell City. Their second game was a twenty or so loss to Ft. Davis. Their third game was against Sierra Blanca, which they won. The fourth game was a great win against Balmorhea. The last game they played was a win at Dell City, and they will hopefully get a win against Fort Davis tomorrow.
The Valentine Pirates will be taking on the Sierra Blanca Vaqueros on Tuesday January 31st. The first game they played against them they won with a score of 77-54, but they are playing on their home court so it will be a little harder than their last game. Last year the Pirates lost by five to the Vaqueros. "So far the Sierra Blanca's boys are number three in the district but if we run our new basketball play Buna we should be able to beat them again.” said Daniel Garnsey. Well lets hope that Daniel is right and they can pull off another win against the Vaqueros!
