Pirate Pride in Lubbock

by Daniel Koch and Garnsey - November 7, 2011

On Saturday November the 5th, the cross country team traveled to Lubbock, TX for the big regional meet. The team arrived in Lubbock with enough daylight to walk the course before the big day. "It really wasn't that bad.” said Daniel Garnsey. "The worst thing about the whole race was the wind and the temperature. Walking the course before the race made it kind of better for us, because we knew the wind was going to be against us, and we knew that there was a 'big' hill. So, I guess we sort of planned the course out, like where to sprint and where to not run so hard to where the wind tired us out. Everyone there was complaining about the hill and how it was going to destroy souls. My team and myself thought differently. We took the hill as an advantage, well, at least going down it.”

The Pirate Cross Country Team did fairly well for their first time at regionals coming in at 16thoverall as a team, and individually Latham Garnsey came in 38th, Aaron Morton came in 51st, Daniel Garnsey came in 85th, Daniel Koch in 134th, and Rye Webb in at 157th. The overall number of runners in the Region I 1A was 166. "I thought they did very well.” said Mr. Cook, who accompanied the Cross Country Team on Saturday. "I thought they did a great job at planning the course out and in the way they finished. I didn't really have an expectation as to what place they would get overall or individually, because they've never ran at this level with so many other kids before. But, they made Coach Mac and I, and the whole school really proud.”

Now that the season has come to an end, the runners are happy in what they accomplished individually and as a team. "I'm just glad that I didn't finish last.” said Cross Country runner Daniel Koch. "It was really fun, and I plan on doing it all again next year.”

Mr. Cook stated that, "This was a very good experience for our runners this year. Hopefully it'll make those who are coming back next year want to do it again.”
