Happy Chinese New Year!

by Aaron Morton - February 1, 2012

Gung Hay Fat Choy! On January 23, 2012 Mrs. Kerley's Kindergarten class celebrated the Chinese New Year. They had a blast discovering interesting facts about Chinese culture. They learned that the Chinese invented the domino and fireworks. They also learned that the animal of the Chinese New Year is the panda, and are now able to locate China on the globe.

Claudia, Eduardo, and Shary all made Chinese wishes for the New Years celebration. Claudia wished to be a better person, to help her mom and dad more, and to speak better. Eduardo wished to be a best friend, to be able to play more, and to be able to watch more cartoons. And Shary wished to be a better sister, to be able to watch more TV, and to be a better person. All great wishes, if I do say so myself.

The Kindergarten class also celebrated the 100th day of school on January 26, 2012. They celebrated by counting. Claudia, Eduardo, and Shary all became certified counters when they were able to count to 100 by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's, and 2 50's make 100! They also made crowns that they each had to place 100 stickers, and listed 100+ words that they all know.

The kids are very happy with the new things they learned and Mrs. Kerley is very proud. Keep up the good work guys!

First and Second grade.by Daniel Koch - January 25, 2012

Today the Pirate news team interviewed Coach Bea and her first through second grade PE class on what they do every day. Coach Bea said "We start out by doing five or six different exercises, sometimes we will do running activities and sometimes hand eye coordination drills.”

Coach BeaMost of the time they are doing things that will help them when they get old enough to do some sports. "Sometimes we do challenges like holding themselves in push ups, whoever does the most jumping jacks, and relay races” said Coach Bea.

On Fridays the kids usually get to choose what they want to do. Some of the things they can choose from are Marco Polo, soccer, hot and cold, super mouse, dodge ball, and many other games. They are all preparing to be the future athletes of Valentine ISD.

Landforms and Shaving Cream

by Daniel Garnsey - January 13, 2012

Mr. Northrip, the new Science and Math teacher for the elementary, was teaching the 3rd and 4th grade Science class about landforms. At the beginning of his class, he had the students write in their Science journals on next week's topic. "Next week we will be learning about the solar system and what it consists of,” said Mr. Northrip. "We just got through learning about landforms.”

When the students were done writing in their journals, Mr. Northrip had two students read out loud what they think the solar system is. "I think the solar system is all the planets and the sun and stuff in space,” said 3rd grader Nayely Rangel.

The students then got to do a project on landforms. The project consisted of shaving cream and popsickle sticks. Mr. Northrip put the shaving cream into two cake pans, and gave each student two sticks. The students were put into two groups and were instructed to shape mountains with the shaving cream using the popsickle sticks.

The students seemed to be enjoying what they were doing, and that's always important. Learning something and having fun at the same time is always the best. I'm sure the students will have lot's of fun learning about the solar system as they did landforms. Keep up the good work Mr. Northrip, you're doing great!

Computers for Pre-K & Kinder

by Daniel Koch and Daniel Garnsey - January 5, 2012

On Monday and Tuesday, Mr. Bernards was installing computers for the Pre-K and Kinder. Yesterday and today the youngsters have been using them to learn everything from math to reading. When I asked Mrs. Kerley how she liked the computers she said "I am very pleased with them; the computers challenge them to think and overall develop critical thinking skills.”

The computers also help Mrs. Kerley teach her class. For instance, yesterday she forgot her books so they pulled them up on line and they were back in action. "It is important for the younger generations to learn computer skills because of the way things are going.” said Mrs. Kerley. These computers should be able to help the youngsters of Valentine grow up around the computer.

Uh Oh

by Mrs. Kerley - September 29, 2011

Tristen - It is never too early to learn how to properly take care of your teeth.

Our Healthy Bodies have healthy teeth.
Now students, listen carefully.
This is what your mouth can look like if you don't take care of your teeth.

Rose is taking action toward good dental hygiene as well.
And you definitely don't want this to happen to them.
