The One Act Play cast has been working really hard these past few weeks. Amelia commented on learning how to block (acting out your lines), "I think that it is beneficial because it forces you to know your lines.” Mrs. Houy and Mrs. Miller have been coming along side the cast members and helping them get into character.
The practices are still Monday's and Wednesday's after school. On February 29, 2012, cast and crew members will travel to Sul Ross and be critiqued on their play, so when the competition actually comes, the cast will be prepared. So far, the cast has been progressing at a good speed.
The name of the play this year is "Finders Keepers”. When a young woman finds a small purse with 400 dollars in it, her husband tries to convince her to find the owner. When she refuses to, she and her husband are shocked when a terrified neighbor asks them for help because she has lost an identical purse with 400 dollars. Set in the 1940s, it promises to be a very comical play. Competition is on March 21, 2012 in Wink. So keep working on those lines thespians!!

Cayenne Webb is excellent with children. She has been helping the elementary teachers during lunch with watching the children. "They're all right for the most part,” said Cayenne Webb. "I get to sit in Mrs. Almanza's chair, that's a plus.” Well, we're certainly glad that you are enjoying your lunch with the little ones and getting to sit in that chair! Cayenne has this duty throughout the whole week starting at 12:05 PM, and seems to enjoy every moment of it. Gotta love those kids!

Today (1/27) the Valentine Pirates News Team interviewed Coach Mac's brilliant honor students during their Economics class. Today the Seniors were studying the history of Latin America and a specific intellectual of their economy.

The seniors all seemed to be very interested in their reading so we tried hard not to disturb them. In the class is Aaron Morton, Amelia Santillan, Cayenne Webb, Nicole Campbell, and Adriana Rangel. The whole class got to get a sticker just for showing up to class today.
Lets hope that all of our Seniors learn what they need to so they can graduate a the end of the year.

On Thursday, January 26, 2012, Adriana Rangel became an official licensed driver. She left at lunch on Thursday hoping to be back for basketball practice, unfortunately she had to wait longer than expected!
She had a few insurance and license plate complications, but after about four and a half hours of waiting, she finally got to take the test using Rene's truck. Adriana was nervous because she hadn't practiced parallel parking in that truck, but she still ended up passing the exam!
Adriana feels like she has more responsibility, while also having more freedom. Adriana was asked what her next step in this process was and she said, "Getting a vehicle! I really want a red bug!” Hopefully that will happen sometime soon. Congratulations Adriana!! We are all proud of you!

The One Act Play cast has been working very hard these past few weeks. The play this year is called Finders Keepers by: George Kelly. There are 3 cast members Daniel Garnsey, who plays Mr. Aldrid, Nicole Campbell, who plays Mrs. Aldrid, and Amelia Santillan, who plays Mrs. Hampton.
The play is comical, but has an excellent moral behind the story. The cast members have play practice Mondays and Wednesdays after school. When Amelia was asked if she knew her lines she said, " For the most part, I am very familiar with my lines.” The play members have not yet started blocking up on stage, but the lines are almost completed, and as soon as they learn their lines they will start blocking.
When Daniel was asked how he likes being in One Act Play he said, " I like it a lot.” It sounds like everything is coming together smoothly and will surely be a play to see!

Mr. Bernards now has the honor of taking care of the "Official Valentine Plant”. Given to him "officially” by Coach Mac last Wednesday (1-11). Coach Mac has been

cleaning up his room, and has decided to give away some of his belongings to other teachers. Mr. Bernards was not present the day that Coach Mac gave away the plant. Sixth period is Algebra class for most of the freshman. Today they were studying liner equations (x+2y=-8). When I asked Mr. Ackley how he liked the class he said "Well, they are not my favorite but most of them seem to catch on pretty good”.
I also asked both Rye and Mr. Ackley what they learned this class period and Rye said "I learned how to solve for "X” in the liner equations”, and Mr. Ackley said "It may take a while for some of these freshman to mature.”Well, lets hope that all the freshman are paying attention, so they can all pass the STAR test.

As of December 29, 2011 another Valentine senior became a licensed driver in the state of Texas. On Tuesday, January 3, 2011 Nicole Campbell arrived to school in her 2003 Ford Ranger as excited as she could be. After six months of taking an on line driver's ed class. She finally finished the course and went to the Texas Dept. of Public Safety office in Van Horn, Texas to take the driving part of the exam.
"I was super, super, super nervous! I was so nervous I could barely sign my name!” says Nicole Campbell when asked how she felt during and before the exam.
With this it makes 2 out of 5 Valentine seniors with their licenses. The first being Cayenne Webb who received her license on March 2, 2011 as a junior. Congratulations on your accomplishments girls! Pictured are Cayenne Webb and Nicole sitting on the Ranger.

On Thursday, November 17, 2011, the Senior girls (pictured L to R - Adriana Rangel, Nicole Campbell, Cayenne Webb, and Amelia Santillan) traveled to Marfa for research on their History Fair project. Since their project is over School Segregation, they went to the Blackwell School to interview Lionel Salgado, Ismael Vasquez, and Joe Cabezuela, the Blackwell School Alliance President, and former students.
The Blackwell school was a segregated school of Hispanics from 1889 through 1965. Joe Cabezuela said, "Back in the day we didn't know we were segregated, and we weren't upset about it because that is just how life was back in the day. The school felt like a family.”
Since the Blackwell school was so small Adriana Rangel said, "It reminded me of Valentine!” By the time the tour was over the Senior girls all agreed that the trip was very enlightening, meaningful, and educational. The Senior girls enjoyed visiting the school and agreed it would be an educational and enjoyable field trip for schools in the area, and for Valentine as well.

Enrique Navarrete was an instant winner of a SpongeBob Squarepants pillow!!!! Tuesday (1/3/12), during lunch, Coach Mac walked calmly over to his truck, opened the door, and dug around in the front seat, and pulled out a SpongeBob Squarepants pillow! Coach walks over to the lunch table, where we all sat, and picked another "instant winner”. Enrique smiled as Coach handed the pillow over to him. For the rest of the day the pillow was on top of the lockers

On Tuesday December the 13th, Daniel Koch and Maria Burunda measured the high school and elementary diesel tanks. They are going empty so we needed to figure out how much fuel the school needs to buy for the radiators. We figured out that the elementary tank has a height of two yards and sixteen inches (which is really the diameter), the length is twenty-four feet and three inches (but it is really the height), and the circumference is twenty-four feet. The high school tank has a height of two yards and fifteen inches, the circumference is thirty-one and a half feet. The one at the elementary is on it's side so it has a different formula than the one at the high school that is up right. After many difficult calculations we decided that the elementary diesel tank holds 7,658 gallons of fuel, and the one at the high school holds 4,257 gallons of fuel. Daniel Garnsey is pictured admiring one of the tanks.

I found this in my classroom the other day. I believe it is an official Aaron Morton autographed baseball. I am wondering what I could get for it on ebay.
Cool photo by Kimberly Morton a.k.a. Lady Sparky.
