The History Fair this year was a success! On Monday, February 15, 2012, the Jr. High and High School History Fair teams travelled to Alpine for the judging on their projects they have been working on these past few months. The sponsor this year is Coach Bea. The Jr. High team consists of, Sergio Rangel, Ignacio Santillan, Jaci Garcia, and Jessie Garcia.

The topic this year in History Fair

is Revolution, Reform, and Reaction. The Jr. High team chose their topic on the Vietnam War. The team did an outstanding job on their board, and made it to state in a solid first place. Another team consisted of the Juniors, Kimberly Morton and Daniel Garnsey. They chose their topic on the Revolution of TV’s. Although they did a great job presenting, and their board was a state winner in the Pirate's eyes, they fell short.

The last team in History Fair are the Senior girls, Adriana Rangel, Cayenne Webb, Amelia Santillan, and Nicole Campbell. Instead of doing a board, they chose to construct a website. Their topic was Segregation in Public Schools. Although they were the only ones in this category, they were still judged on the website, and also made it to state in first place. Congratulations everyone! There will be a lot of work cut out for both teams to prepare for state, but we're sure it will be an exciting opportunity for everyone involved!

Today the Valentine Student Council, worked really hard on delivering roses, chocolates, balloons and white carnations to all who bought. The roses and white carnations were bought at Porters, in Alpine Texas. The History Fair people picked them up yesterday afternoon on their way home from the History Fair competition.
The STCO did very well on their Valentine's Day fund-raiser, they sold about $400 dollars worth. Nicole says that "this year we had a lot more orders then last year and the roses were so beautiful!” The officers and representatives did very well selling "I am very proud of them!!!” says STUCO President Adriana Rangel. The Valentine Student Council would like to thank everyone who helped and purchased this year!!!
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!!!! <3

Valentineisd.com is ready to take the next step. We are adding video to the site. Please view the test video I have put up and see how good it looks. This is a music Video by Kina Grannis called Valentine. How appropriate for us and for the season. We plan on all kinds of clips and productions and look forward to involving everyone that wants to participate. Hopefully we will be able to put up sports highlights, class projects, individual projects, or whatever to highlight the wonderful talent and ability that Valentine has among us. Keep posted!

This year's Valentine's Day stamp winner freshman Latham Garnsey had an interview with the Odessa American newspaper crew yesterday (2-8)! They asked him general questions about why he chose the design he drew and what inspired it, his age, who won last year, etc. He also asked Latham how he felt about winning and Latham replied with "I felt like I was being interrogated.” Whoever gets the Odessa American keep a look out for our pirate!
The crew members that came to Valentine were Albert Cesare and Lyxan Toledans. Albert usually does photo journalism and takes sports photos all over the Permian Basin, Lyxan is a pro on live interviews and city officials' perspective on their town. Both Lyxan and Albert have been working with Odessa American for about a year and a half and it seems like they really enjoy it!
They told Daniel Koch he has to be interested and dedicated to get a good story, which is very true. They really enjoyed our school and what we had to offer, especially our advanced technology! All of the Pirate News Team really enjoyed seeing a 'real' news team do their thing!

The book fair is back!! On February 13-17th, Mrs. Cook and Mrs. Matthews will be hosting the annual book fair. This year's theme is a Hawaiian Luau (or Hawaiian party) which will be held in the High School Library from 8 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon. Mrs. Cook also said she is willing to stay during lunch and just take a later one - and if requested by a parent she will stay till 4p.m. There will also be a wish list sign up for friends, parents or teachers. There may be a surprise for some kids that wrote down a wish! (: the reason we and every school puts on a book fair every year is all the money is earned within those 4 days goes to buy new books for the school library! Should be fun, should be exciting!!

You know what I've been thinking about, lately? A ping pong club! I think it'll be a fun new change for Valentine that everyone will love. It could be a good chance for the students who aren't involved in track, tennis, or golf to still get involved with their fellow students in a school sanctioned event.
Mr. Cook already approved it! All we have to do is provide the table, paddles, balls, and a sponsor that can open the school for us. This is just for the Valentine community after school. We need to see if there is enough interest in the Middle School and High School for ping pong in Valentine. Please respond to the new VISD poll on the web site.

Yesterday (2/9/12) Mrs. Cook asked Mrs. Miller if she could use some boys to help her set up tables for the book fair. Freshmen, Latham

Garnsey, Enrique Navarrete, and Rye Webb and Sophomore Daniel Koch were the lucky boys that helped! Mrs. Cook said that when they got to the auditorium, the boys asked if they could wear goofy hats. They got a little crazy Mrs. Cook said. She was thankful that they helped her.

On Monday, the Jr. High and High School will travel to Alpine for History Fair. Coach Porras (sponsor) plans to be in Alpine at 8:00, giving the groups 45 minutes to set the boards up. Meaning they will have to leave at 7:00 sharp. The students were happy, but not so thrilled with the time they are to leave. They are hoping to have a trip to Austin. The groups have put a lot of effort into their projects, and are happy to be able to represent their school. I want to give a big thank you to Danny Garcia for making the boards for us!

These past few weeks the Pirate News Team has been doing a poll. It was "What would be the perfect Valentines Day gift for your special someone?” The choices were: Chocolate, teddy bear, dinner for two, romantic movie, and or all the above. Well of course all of the above won with 63% of the votes, dinner for two came in second with 16%, teddy bear came in third with 13%, and chocolate and romantic movie both came in fourth with 3% apiece. Now the Valentine Pirate News Team has a new poll "Are you interested in joining a Valentine Ping Pong club?”, so be sure to vote!

The Valentine Pirate news team (Daniel Garnsey, Kimberly Morton, Daniel Koch and Jessie Garcia) got new shirts! "Thank you Mr. Bernards for making me feel 'official!' these are gangsta!!” said Daniel Garnsey. Now that we have these shirts we have the freedom to go anywhere and film, interview or take pictures without getting kicked out. "I feel like we have more authority” said Kim. (:

Latham Garnsey was the winner of the Valentine's Day postmark this year. The Valentine postmark is seen all over the world, where people who want to send their loved ones, cards on Valentine's Day. The letters and cards are all canceled at the Valentine Post Office – 79854.

Latham was surprised that he had won because he didn't expect to win. The contest winner is decided by the city council. The city council doesn't know who draws the picture, they just pick the number on the page. The number is then matched up with a name, and that is how they find the winner. All of the students try really hard to win this accomplishment. Congratulations to Latham Garnsey!

Recently, Ernie's business office and Maralea's tax office was moved next door to one of the old apartments. The move took place in mid September last year. They say the old office needed a lot of repairs, and moving next door was the best option. Moving to the new office also gave them much needed space for storage. That way they didn't have to go all the way to the depot to store something.

Ernie and Maralea are both very happy with their new office space and hope to stay permanently. They say the bigger and brighter office is really nice, thus improving their mood, which makes for higher quality work. The bigger space also makes for a more efficiently run office, since they're not fumbling their way around a crammed office space. The tax customers have had nothing but positive things to say about the new office and we're all just very pleased with it, says Ernie.

A wheelchair ramp was also installed in the middle of July. It is located behind the tax office and is about 25 feet long. It was installed to service the five handicaped tax customers in Valentine, and because it was required by law to have it. The tax office is firing on all cylinders now, so their ready for all Valentine has to offer.

Parents Night! The last district basketball game is quickly approaching, which means its almost time to honor the parents of the student athletes. On February 7th the Pirates will be hosting a game against the Balmorhrea Bears.
The High School Lady Pirates will tip-off at 6:30 followed by the boy's game. After the games, the athletes and the parents will gather around the gym so the Pirates can present their parents a rose to show them how much we appreciate them.
This is a very fun time for the Parents and friends of the student athletes to come together and support the Valentine Pirates. It's also a great time for Valentine ISD to show the parents how thankful they are for letting them work with their kids. Last year's Parent's Night turned out great with almost all of the parents coming to the ceremony, so lets keep that momentum going and try to get all the parents to come again.
